City of London

Often known as “The City” or the “Square Mile” due to its small size, the City of London is a very important part of the metropolis of London. The original historic part of London which was settled by the Romans 2000 years ago. The city boundary still roughly follows the line of the old Roman city wall. Today it’s now the financial district and become full of modern, futuristic buildings and tall skyscrapers, alongside the ancient buildings like the Tower of London.

Tower of London

For over 900 years, the Tower of London has been standing guard over the capital. The Tower of London was originally built by William the Conqueror, following his successful invasion of England in 1066. A history as a Royal Palace, fortress, prison, place of execution, arsenal, Royal Mint, Royal Zoo and home to the Queens Crown Jewels.

Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge has stood over the River Thames in London since 1894 and is one of the finest, most recognisable bridges in the world. It is the only bridge on the River Thames that can be raised to allow ships to pass through.

St Paul’s Cathedral

A famous London landmark. At 365 feet (111 m) high, it was the tallest building in London from 1710 to 1967. St Paul's Cathedral seen today – the fourth, was built between 1675 and 1711 by Sir Christopher Wren, the great architect who is buried inside. It has the second biggest dome in the world, after St Peter's in Rome.

Greenwich

Since the earliest times Greenwich has had associations with the sea and navigation. It was a landing place for the Romans, Henry VIII was born here and the Royal Navy has roots on the waterfront. Charles II founded the Royal Observatory in 1675. The home of Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian since 1884, Greenwich has long been a centre for astronomical study, while navigators across the world have set their clocks according to its time of day.

Royal Observatory (extra charge)

Situated on a hill in Greenwich Park, overlooking the River Thames with stunning views of London’s skyline. It played a major role in the history of astronomy and navigation, and because the prime meridian passes through it, it gave its name to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Inside you can stand on the world's Prime Meridian.

The Old Royal Naval College (free entry)

Sir Christopher Wren's riverside masterpiece. A UNESCO World Heritage Site built on the site of Greenwich Palace, it’s a British landmark encompassing some of the finest buildings in the world, including the 200 year old Painted Hall, one of the most beautiful rooms in England.

Maritime Museum (free entry)

The museum has the most important holdings in the world on the history of Britain at sea comprising more than two million items, including maritime art, ship models plus scientific and navigational instruments.

Cutty Sark (extra charge to enter onboard)

Near Greenwich Pier on the banks of the River Thames is the last remaining "Tea Clipper" ship in England and the fastest ship of its time.

The Queens House (free entry)

Home to an internationally renowned art collection, Inigo Jones’ architectural masterpiece is the first Classical building in the UK.
